|
|
fed up with Xgl ?
fed up with loose options in kdm ? with videos readers tears on Xgl ? with impossibilty to launch many 3D apps and games on Xgl ? with java applets non-fonctionnals ?
fed up with compiz ? not easy themes ? bad kde integration ?
Beryl is out !
With new Nvidia drivers !
add the kernel-sources if you dont have it (?!?)
just add this in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
Section "device"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
Option "BackStoring" "True"
Section "screen"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "RENDER" "Enable"
and, in /etc/sysconfig/xgl
XGL=no
in /etc/sysconfig/compiz
COMPIZ=no
and add this cooker media
urpmi.addmedia beryl http://zarb.org/~plouf/test/beryl with hdlist.cz
finally install :
urpmi beryl
(install new nvidia driver too, if they dont have dep on beryl)
reboot (for new dkms-nvidia works, the most simply way)
when Kde is ok, just launch the command
beryl-manager
have fun
note : urpme compiz is a good idea (dont select it in beryl-manager ! or uninstall compiz directly). And Be carrefull with kde screensaver : unactive it!
Thanks to Plouf for it great packages works ! Thanks to Beryl real community for this real clean, perfect tool !!! Off course, thanks to Mandriva. And thanks to Nvidia for the new cool driver (but not open-source unfortunatly) |

Hi Bubar
I followed your instructions but when I rebooted the system all I get is a black screen.
I have booted in failsafe mode and then switched to run level 3, checked xorg.conf and other files to make sure i had not made an error there and all was as it shouldbe. I then looked at the xorg log and it did not have any errors. I did use the nvidia driver from plf, its the same number as the beta drivers from nvidia's site. Could that be the problem? Do I need to use the nvidia installer instead?
Any suggestions appreciated. |

no window decorations at all (not title bar, frame
etc.)
all the effects are present but without
window decs it's not very usable ...
any advice would be appreciated
(emerald is installed and I can select it
as window decorator, but no decorations
appear) |

Hi Bubar
I am running the 9625 driver. I suspect there may be some thing left in place from previous config that is causing the problem. I will undo what I have done and retry.
thanks |

hi Again
Just an update, I have resolved my problem, I had to unload the eeprom module. That allowed me to launch the xserver. I still had problems with beryl manager, so I renamed .kde and restarted xserver. Beryl manager worked and now I have all the kewl 3d stuff working |

Some people reports problems between the new beta-driver Nvidia and usage of lm_sensors. (here i ve not this one, but seems to be a possiblity of troubles) on Nvidia forums.
So if anybody use lm_sensors ,normally and have trouble with the 9625, please test without lm_sensors. |

if you want to test a "beryl on boot" solution, please add this line into the
| Code: | /etc/sysconfig/compositing-wm
COMPOSITING_WM_START=yes
COMPOSITING_WINDOW_DECORATOR=beryl-manager |
|

If I try that then when kde starts beryl does not start
properly (no window decorations e.g.). Ordinary kde start
and *then* running beryl-manager is no problem. |

Just followed the instructions and installed all the rpm packages mentioned here.
I rebooted and ran beryl-manager.
It started up and complained about not being able to find Nvidia and was using AGLX (or something like that as it then vanished after a bit (before I managed to record it).
The Beryl splash screen is displayed, and the machine promptly throws me back to the login screen.
Upon logging in again.. no sign of beryl.

Just ran beryl-manager as user not root and the message is
XGL absent, checking for Nvidia. The splash is shown, then a white screen, then back to the login.

Hi bubar,
thanks for the instructions, worked like a charm on my system (although I used smart instead of urpmi for upgrading ) . Beryl is really cool and performs much better on my system compared to compiz.
Thanks again!

I am not getting any decorations (title bar, frames, etc.) when I start beryl-manager. I get the following messages when executing beryl-manager:
| Code: | XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia present
Restart beryl with __GL_YIELD="NOTHING"
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia present
Couldn't load settings. Reverting to defaults.
Initializing splash |
Compiz has been completely uninstalled. I've installed the nVidia 9626 drivers and beryl from zarb using urpmi. I do get the animations and the spinning cube desktop.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steven

Hi,
here is a working /etc/sysconfig/compositing-wm file
COMPOSITING_WM_START=yes
COMPOSITING_WM=beryl
COMPOSITING_WM_ARGS=--force-aiglx
COMPOSITING_WINDOW_DECORATOR=emerald
You need nothing more, just reboot.
"emerald" as window decorator because beryl-manager doesn't autostart window-manager/decorator any more (the message appears when you start beryl-manager from a console), so no window decoration with beryl-manager.
And --force-aiglx to prevent beryl searching for xgl.
Works great here with KDE (nvidia fx5500). |

Still no decorations for me even with the new composting_wm file. Beryl is starting automatically.
BTW, when I run emerald manually (emerald --replace), I got the message:
Couldn't load settings. Reverting to defaults.
Thanks,

I did come across this:
(Ticket #248) No decorations with Beryl/Emerald on new Nvidia drivers:
http://bugs.beryl-project.org/ticket/248
But, it didn't help me.

I got decorations now!
I had initially tried to install Beryl from a set of main and contrib MDV 2007 urpmi media sites. Then I saw that I needed to add zarb.org, I simply updated Beryl with what is on zarb (v0.1.1). To fix the issue, I completely uninstalled beryl and emerald and removed any ~/.beryl and ~/.emerald files. Then I used urpmi to reinstall everthing.
So, I think the key is to add zarb to your urpmi media list before installing beryl.
Hope this helps,

Got decorations too now... ahhh....
something removed
Section "device"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
Option "BackStoring" "True"
Section "screen"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "RENDER" "Enable"
from my xorg and I didn't realise.
Now there back.. all is great...
Just need to get it working on the LCD notebook monitor now rather than the plugged in LCD and I'll be really happy.. then to have a go at my main notebook.

Part of my xorg.conf additions:
Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 6 Series"
Driver "nv"
Option "DPMS"
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"
Option "BackStoring" "True"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen1"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 24
# Options "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
This is not my active xorg.conf.
I had to comment out Options,"Add.....Visuals." It said it was in a inapprobriate place.
My current xorg shows device driver as nvidia.
Where should the Options ''Add.. go?
Should the recommended additions to xorg be in sections by themselves?

I get the same messages with beryl-plugins-fire. Beryl seems to run fine without the extra plug-in. What does this extra plug-in do anyway?
Thanks,
