Hello everybody

I'm an almost happy user of Mandrake-Mandriva since a long time. Since the latest 9.x version, everything was going well and smoothly for the most sensible issue in linux: printing. With my hp psc 2175, I had no problem printing and scanning, I was even recommending it to everybody using linux.

Since I upgraded to 2006.0 (from LE 2005), my printer constantly stops printing sometimes at the end of a job (leaving the paper in the printer, the last line unprinted), or even in the middle of a job. The printer ejects the remaining paper a couple of minutes later. If I want it to print again, I have to cancel the printing on the printer, unplug and replug the usb cable, and restart hplip and cups. If it was stopped in the middle of a job, the job usually restarts from the first page.

Now, here are the relevant messages I can catch in /var/log/messages:

Code:
Dec 20 11:58:08 hexil hpiod: invalid uri:hp:/usb/PSC_2170_Series?serial=MY3AEF816S73
Dec 20 11:58:08 hexil PSC_2170_Series?serial=MY3AEF816S73: INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds...
Dec 20 11:58:08 hexil python: hpssd [WARN] Unable to find GUI for username ben.
Dec 20 11:58:08 hexil python: hpssd [ERROR] No GUI available. (16)
Dec 20 11:58:08 hexil python: hpssd [ERROR] Unhandled exception during processing

here is my lsusb result:

Code:

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 031: ID 03f0:2b11 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 001 Device 021: ID 0472:0065 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd PFU-65 Keyboard
Bus 001 Device 020: ID 0472:0065 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd PFU-65 Keyboard
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

I have udevd running, hald, etc.

I still cannot believe it was working so well before and I'm now going through a hard time each time I have to print anything.

Thanks for your help

Replying to mylsef.

I solved the problem by upgrading, using a very-not-newbie-kind-of-solution.

I found that in cooker (http://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14909), foomatic-db-hpijs has been updated. I found that while searching for
Code:
hpiod: device cleanup id=1

because I found the message exactly when the printer stopped printing.

So, I tried to upgrade using the rpm from cooker. I found it needed the newest hplip software which I also downloaded from cooker.

Guess what ? Wasn't working well, even if it upgraded all dependancies, libsnmp.so.5 was not found. And making a symlink of libsnmp.so.5 to one of the libsnmp present at the time was not working.

So, I took "the long way home". Downloaded the .src.rpm of hplip (hplip-0.9.7-4mdk.src.rpm), and rebuilded it. Also rebuilded foomatic-db-hpijs-2.1.6-1.20051026.1mdk.src.rpm and installed the newest foomatic ensemble.

And it solved my problem. Now, everything prints fast and instantly like it used to do. Smile

Nice job - I've added a comment on the bug asking if the fix can be backported to 2006.0. Thanks.

Adam, this bug is with hplip, right? It's a show-stopper for me, having just installed the 2006 December edition. I cannot install the Cooker hplip-0.9.7-4 because it throws me a "Cannot register rpm" error. I don't know how to rebuild the source for the same. The solution seems to be that I wait for the official 0.9.7-4. Is there another way to fix this?

Thanks,
David

shelby: seems to be, yup. You could pm walrus and ask if he can send you the rebuilt RPMs?

Since some people seem to need them, here are my first "publicly released" rebuilded packages, hplip and foomatic rpms rebuilded against mandriva 2006.0 .

You'll find them at http://rpms.benoitst-andre.net/ , RPMS and SRPMS if needed.

If I did something wrong, don't hesitate to tell me, it's my first time I dig into the .spec files to change things.

Since I moved (upgraded) to 2006, I've lost my printer. Everything says it's there, test prints think they work but nothing is printed (and CUPS shows pending jobs going nowhere). I tried to rpm suggested in this thread - no joy.

I removed the printer in PrinterDrake and re-installed after running the foomatic-db-hpijs-2.1.6-1.20051026.1bs_mdk20060.noarch.rpm - still no joy.

Not a huge deal since I don't do that much printer, but it's still frustrating.

FWIW, the scanner portion of the 1350 is working fine (SANE into Gimp).

For grins, I recently ran the 5.10 Ubuntu live cd - it found the printer and prints to it like a dream.

Suggestions, hints, tips greatly appreciated.

Doug
