Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
I have both UXA and greedy set in mine and so-far-so-good.
| Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "Intel Corporation"
BoardName "Intel 810 and later"
Driver "intel"
Option "DPMS"
Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
Option "MonitorLayout" "NONE,CRT+LFP"
Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
EndSection
|
[May 18, 2009 edit:] The graphics card is an Intel GM965, [May 19 edit] and the "MonitorLayout" line occurs because the laptop is on a docking station with an external monitor.

|

UPDATED I installed the new testing driver via rpmdrake, version 2.7.1.0.0.1mdk and modified my xorg.conf file as suggested. I didn't have any freeze ups before the upgrade but graphics performance was abysmal. The horizontal lines in KDE4 disappeared and graphics performance is notably improved. My system is a Sylvania g Netbook Meso with an Intel 945 chipset.

It looked like the problem is solved here, at least on this netbook, but after making those changes I did experience two freeze ups. I removed the code above from my xorg.conf, effectively going back to the original default configuration without UXA. No more freeze ups. Performance is still better than with the original driver. I need to go back into KDE to see how the menu looks. |

Well, Caitlyn, I'm sorry for the mileage you are getting with this configuration. Mine, a different chipset, is working very well. I've even enabled KDE effects with no lockups so far. The new libdrm, driver 2.7.1, and those additions to xorg.conf are giving me great "mileage." Particularly because your experience contributed to your recommendation to pass on 2009.1 (even though I thought the review showed siginificant respect overall for Mandriva), I'm sorry your 945 did not do as well.

David, first, a huge thank you for being more understanding than some of the DistroWatch readers. Yes, I respect Mandriva. I've used it on and off since the early days of Mandrake and I've always thought it's an excellent distro which has always been quite user friendly. I'm certain the video issues will be solved soon, not just with Intel chipsets, but likely with updated support for some of the other chipsets that have been dropped. My understanding, based on Adam Williamson's post in the comments section of DistroWatch, is that the SiS driver that was dropped in 2009.1 could eventually be updated for the latest X.org. It just hasn't been done yet.
Excellent distros sometimes have subpar releases. I remember Red Hat 7.0 as an example. When 7.1 came out it was excellent. I expect the same will happen with the next release of Mandriva. A distro as good as Mandriva generally is always bounces back.
I wonder if anyone has looked at what Ubuntu did in making the older 2.4 driver available. Is that a possibility for Mandriva 2009.1? |

Rare??! I read Adam's comments, of course he's right except he calls basically all the dozens of computers I use "rare!" Wow, maybe I should sell them, or donate them to the Smithsonian?
I'm sorry but the driver issue is "driving" Linux to marginalize and leave behind a vast swath of the hardware out there, not just video hardware either.
Oh well, one way to "stimulate the economy" eh? No matter what system you use, win7 and the future of Linux (apparently) will force you to buy new hardware, or leave an old, un-patched system on your "rare" equipment forever and hope a crack doesn't get exploited before the hardware dies.
no sir, I don't like it... (<-trivia; who says that?)
