I already looked for it in tools, that's where it was in 2009.0. It ain't there in 2009.1

It isn't in /usr/bin/nvidia-settings either. In fact, nvidia-settings isn't in /usr/bin ... Sad

It just does not exist on my machine.

When I try to select the Nvidia 6100 from MCC set up graphical server, the download always fails and it reverts to the default driver ... which will not support my monitors resolution.

This issue has not been [SOLVED]

I tried to load the nvidia 6100 driver again from MCC, it failed with this message :

... Could not install the x11-driver-video-nvidia-current package! ...

OK. Try these commands as root in terminal and if it fails post the output here:

su
urpmi.update -av
urpmi -v kernel-desktop-latest kernel-desktop-devel-latest
urpmi -v nvidia-current-kernel-desktop-latest dkms-nvidia-current

if it doesn't show any errors then try reconfiguring your card again.

This driver is for GeForce 6 and later cards.
Use XFdrake to configure X to use the correct NVIDIA driver. Any needed
packages will be automatically installed if not already present.
1. Run XFdrake as root.
2. Go to the Graphics Card list.
3. Select your card (it is usually already autoselected).
4. Answer any questions asked and then quit.
If you do not want to use XFdrake, see README.manual-setup.

Well, it wasn't there when I posted my question. The space occupied by the relevant icon was blank. I had removed a lot of packages, trying to declutter the space in my brain that keeps track of what's on the computer and why. Maybe I overdid it!

Ended up reinstalling Mandriva (which tells you I have a lot to learn); but upgraded to 2009.1. The X server kept restarting. After arguing a few times with the text-mode X server configuration tool, I managed to get my display manager running again.

I applied the kernel updates that became available the other day, after which the X server went back to repeatedly restarting. I used the text-mode X server configuration tool to switch to the driver for "cards not working with nv" and X started up. I used System -> Administration -> Nvidia Display Settings to switch back to the driver for "GeFroce 6100 or later".

Found the "set up graphical server" tool in the Mandriva control center, and managed to get the front end resolution to agree with the back end resolution. They hadn't agreed before the reinstall.

Somewhere along the line, I came across a list of GPUs supported by Nvidia's proprietary driver (180.51). My GeForce 8200 was not listed there. Wish I could remember where that list was.

New problem: When the computer boots up, the gdm doesn't start. itself. I have to log on as root and type "gdm <ENTER>" to start the gdm. Is this a config file issue, a shell script issue, an ID10T issue, or what?

Somewhere along the line, I came across a list of GPUs supported by Nvidia's proprietary driver (180.51). My GeForce 8200 was not listed there. Wish I could remember where that list was.

New problem: When the computer boots up, the gdm doesn't start. itself. I have to log on as root and type "gdm <ENTER>" to start the gdm. Is this a config file issue, a shell script issue, an ID10T issue, or what?

If it ain't on your machine, there must be something wrong with your set up ... just what that might be, I don't know.

8200 is supported by 180.51, click "supported products list" here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_180.51.html

Try this: in the GRUB screen press F3, select default then hit Enter. In the command line that appears type:

speedboot=no

then hit Enter. Does that make any difference?

Adding "speedboot=no" as you suggested did not change a thing. Thanks, though.

Open the Mandriva control centre>H/W>Set up the graphical server>options, is "Automatically start the graphical interface" checked?
